The Unsung Journey

I saw a honeybee

crawling along the concrete

Amidst a sea of giants, going mostly unnoticed

The poor thing tried so desperately to fly

Managing to get an inch off the ground

Swaying in the air for a millisecond

Only to drop the pavement again

If I were a child, I would stomped on it

Put the insect out of its misery

Instead I observed,

Watching as it was nearly squashed

Step by step, shoe by shoe

Every would be killer just barely missing

This tiny wanderer

See, though it could no longer fly,

This bee was clever

To outsmart death at least five times

Unknowingly standing off against a being

over one hundred times its size.
