Skeleton Paint

We paint our faces like armor

Ready to stride into battle

Others find it unnerving

Because it’s not considered normal

But we dismiss their judgement

With our subtle smiles

And pay no mind to the scowls

We see in the street

They don’t know how empowered we are

To don our feathered top hats

And our lace gloves

To paint wings on our eyelids

And blood on our lips

You say we look dead but we are

Very much alive

Bedazzled in our skeleton paint, we thrive.
